PGA TOUR Comes To Coco Beach Golf & Country Club
Today the PGA TOUR announced a new tournament for the 2008 TOUR schedule, the Puerto Rico Open presented by Banco Popular, to be held March 17-23, 2008, and hosted by the Puerto Rico Golf Association at the Tom Kite designed Coco Beach Golf & Country Club – Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. Coco Beach Golf & Country Club is comprised of four unique and challenging nines, a compilation of which will serve as the host course for the event.

There are some very exciting projects underway at Coco Beach Golf & Country Club. For the enjoyment of our membership and the possibility of hosting a future PGA Tour event, we are in the process of renovating the bunkers throughout the golf course with PGA Tour-grade white silica sand and state-of-the-art bunker drainage systems. Coco Beach is the first and only golf course in Puerto Rico to feature imported silica sand bunkers. In addition, ten new tees and several new bunkers are being strategically added throughout the golf course to fulfill PGA Tour standards. Upon completion, a true PGA Tour-ready 18-hole Championship layout will be established. These additions and upgrades will make Coco Beach Golf & Country Club Puerto Rico’s premier golf destination. Coco Beach Announces Dave Russell As The New Golf Course Superintendent
Coco Beach Golf & Country Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Dave Russell as the new golf course Superintendent. Dave Russell is a graduate of the University of Arizona where he attended school on golf scholarship. Dave spent the first six years of his career as a professional golfer, playing in tournaments throughout the United States. Dave eventually took up teaching as golf professional at Rio Rico Resort & CC in Arizona before accepting a position as construction foreman in charge of rebuilding the greens at Arizona’s Tubac Golf Resort. Impressed with his work, Tubac made Dave their Assistant Superintendent and shortly thereafter promoted him to Head Superintendent in 1997. In 2001, Dave became Superintendent of Forty Niner Country Club in Tucson, Arizona where he spent the next year and a half prior to moving on to Canoa Ranch Golf Club in Green Valley, Arizona.

On October 16, 2005, numerous celebrities attended the first annual Celebrity Cancer Golf Classic held at Coco Beach Golf & Country Club. Notable celebrities taking part in the days charitable activities included J. Lo, Marc Anthony, Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez, Chayanne, Felix "Tito" Trinidad, Giselle, Chi Chi Rodriquez, Puerto Rico's Governor Anibal Acevedo Vila and other local Puerto Rican celebrities and TV personalities. The day's events were a great success raising more than $100,000 for two Puerto Rican cancer facilities (Hospital Auxilio Mutuo Cancer Center and Sociedad America del Cancer). Coco Beach Golf & Country Club has been honored by Golf Inc. magazine as 2nd Place finisher in their 2006 Development of the Year contest. Coco Beach was chosen in the International category. Judges evaluated finalists in each category based on four different criteria: whether the development team achieved its mission (50%); the course routing (20%); the course aesthetics (20%) and other amenities (10%). On January 13th, 2007, numerous celebrities attended the second annual Celebrity Cancer Golf Classic held at Coco Beach Golf & Country Club. Notable celebrities taking part in the day's charitable activities included Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez, Chayanne, Funky Joe, Felix "Tito" Trinidad, Chi Chi Rodriqez, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Baerga, Puerto Rico's Governor - Anibal Acevedo Vila, San Juan's Mayor - Jorge Santini and many other local Puerto Rican celebrities and television personalities. The day's events were a tremendous success raising approximately $190,000 (almost doubling last year's amount) for two Puerto Rican cancer facilities - Hospital Auxilio Mutuo Cancer Center and Sociedad America del Cancer.
